Southsea’s 6-a-side team finished of the season with 2 fantastic 5-0 victories to end up in first place in Division 3 (East). This secures promotion to Division 2, and thankfully travelling times will be much reduced this season due to the make up of the teams in our new division. We now need to avoid relegation to prevent slipping back into the so called regionalised Div 3.
Annie sorted out a fantastic Christmas meal at the Eastney Tavern to round off the year. All places were filled and everyone that attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Thanks to Annie for organising.
2019 So far and Look-ahead:
This year the club has already had a great quiz night thanks to Mike and Maz, and further social events are on the horizon.
The club entered the Quob Stables Winter league and the variety of players that took part did us proud. All three league games were won, first Cobbetts Six (6-3), then Fareham Acorns(6-3), and the last being a close 5-4 against Shedfield. Amazingly Ian Owens in his first ever competitive matches just kept on winning with a 9 from 9 record in the league stages. The successful league campaign saw us into the Gold competition semi finals, unfortunately we were easily beaten by (Cobbetts) Leftovers. However in our defence, they did win the Gold last year and in the end defended their title and ran out winners again this year. Our last Winter league match was a Gold 3rd/4th playoff versus Fareham Oaks, who to be honest probably were favourites. However, after being 2-1 down after the first round of games, we then pulled back to 6-6 after the second, and then won 2 from 3 to make the final score 5-4 to Southsea (Pink Power!!!!). 3rd placed overall, effectively 2 places higher than last years Silver win.
Next up we have a visit to our Thursday 21st March club session from a Hayling Island group brought over by Peter May. This is intended to be a fun ‘competition match’. Then, the next competitive matches the club is looking forward to are the High Level Roofing finals on Sunday 24th March (if we can get a team organised). Our 6-a-side league campaign then starts on Tuesday 9th April away at Shipmates (Owslebury). Unfortunately we haven’t quite got enough players to enter the 9-a-side league just yet. We will run the same format as last year with anyone turning up guaranteed a game in home matches and selection for away matches.
The committee has secured permission from the council to run a demonstration/come and try promotions event in the Southsea bandstand area on Sunday April 21st. Details are being finalised but a big shout-out will be going out for volunteers at some point so make space in your diaries. Probability is to run it early afternoon, and there is likely to be a barbeque or suchlike on completion as a thank you to those taking part (again details not finalised just yet and weather dependent). This will be the clubs big push for new members this year so hopefully it will be a nice sunny day with a large amount of promenade ‘passers by’ showing an interest.
In May we will have our normal Southsea Open triples, and a summer doubles and autumn melee (where you play with different partners) are also planned.
After last years successful hosting of Portchester, in a friendly match there will be a reciprocal event this year (3rd August) where we will play them at their ground. Also happening again for the third consecutive year (later in August) will be the similar friendly match vs Arborfield (at Southsea).
So a busy year ahead, clocks are changing soon and the weather should be picking up and we’ll soon be into the sunny Petanque season proper.
